Fr. Douglas Smith, C.S.C., returned to Notre Dame in late-2021, following a three-year term in Rome as the steward general of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Prior to Rome he was director of operations and finance in the Enrollment Division, which followed service as business manager for Innovation Park and Campus Ministry.

Currently, Fr. Doug is working on a book covering the civil and human rights work of Fr. William M. Lewers, C.S.C. Fr. Lewers was actively engaged in civil rights from the 1960s on. Prior to his death in 1997 he was the director of the Center for Civil and Human Rights.

In addition to the research and writing, Fr. Doug is gradually catching up on a long list of deferred reading that has encompassed spirituality, cosmology, agriculture, and watercolor art.
